Professional Development Funding (Travel, Publications, etc.)

Purpose: Professional development funds for SLU-Madrid faculty include financial support for traveling to professional conferences and meetings for presentations, full or partial reimbursements of publication fees for articles accepted for publication in scholarly journals, and costs related to participating in training programs and projects that directly enhance a faculty member's expertise in research and teaching. The procedure for applying for each of these academic activities is described below.

The funding of professional development academic activities will always be subject to availability of resources in the current fiscal year, a recommendation from the program director or department chair of the applicant, a recommendation from the Faculty Professional Development Academic Committee (FPDAC), and approval from the Academic Dean.

Eligibility: All faculty are eligible. Part-time faculty members, however, must fulfill the following criteria:

1. Completion of at least two semesters teaching at SLU-Madrid.

2. Evidence that the corresponding research project is under the affiliation to Saint Louis University; for example, the invitation/acceptance letter from the organizer has been sent to the SLU e-mail account. In case of co-affiliation to other institutions, the applicant will be eligible for partial funding only (e.g., conference fee).

All funding applications must include a statement of support from the corresponding program director/department chair as detailed in the section Procedure and Application below. This statement will be based on, among others, the contribution of the academic activity to the professional development of the applicant and his/her continuity as a member of SLU-Madrid.

Funding for Travel to Academic Conferences, Symposiums, and National and International Meetings

Full or partial financial support will be granted to presentations of working papers or projects that lead scholarly publication according to the standards accepted and applicable in the corresponding discipline. The following general guidelines apply:

●   The FPDAC normally will not recommend funding for attendance only or for poster presentations. However, in exceptional cases, the FPDAC will consider applications if supported by a recommendation from the program director/department chair.

●   Full-time faculty members can apply for up to one international and one national/European conference per year. Part-time faculty members can apply for one conference per year.

●   The presentation must identify the faculty member's affiliation to SLU-Madrid for full-time professors and/or co-affiliation with SLU-Madrid for part-time faculty members.

●   When possible, the PowerPoint presentations will be made using SLU-Madrid's corporate PPT template.

●   All faculty share in SLU-Madrid's ambition to increase its identity as a center for research excellence. Thus, funded faculty must submit a description of their research/academic activity to SLU-Madrid's marketing department by filling out this form. The information submitted should include the title of the presentation; a brief description of the presentation or project; the title of the conference/venue, its location, date, and importance; a photograph (if possible); and any additional relevant information. Marketing will make every effort to publicize faculty research activity about via social media.

●   To show accountability, faculty are required to complete one of the two activities listed below, preferably within six months of their presentation:

o   Submit a one-page report to both their program director/department chair and the FPDAC on the presentation and progress made towards publication or a copy of the work in case it is published in the conference proceedings, journal, or book. This report must be included in the faculty member's annual "Faculty Activity Report."

o   Participate in an on-campus research-related activity, such as:

▪    Presenting the manuscript at a departmental brown-bag research seminar;

▪    Presenting the manuscript at a departmental research/teaching event;

▪    Presenting an adapted version of the manuscript to students;

▪    Presenting at other similar activities or events.

Program directors/department chairs may require the funded faculty to participate in on-campus research presentations/activities.

Full or partial financial support will be provided to other non-conference academic activities such as costs related to participating in training programs and projects that directly enhance a faculty member's expertise in research and teaching (e.g., extramural training like crash course on a specific research or teaching topic, visits to archives, funding the visit of an article peer-reviewer, etc.).
