In Perspective: An Overview of the Intellectual, Ethical and Religious Foundations of Saint Louis University
Saint Louis University is a private, Catholic university sponsored by the Society of Jesus. It is not church-related, in the sense that it does not receive financial support from a church body, and it is not under jurisdictional control of a church body. It is similar to other private universities in the U.S. in that the ultimate governing responsibility is vested in an independent Board of Trustees. According to the Bylaws of the University: (i) The University will be publicly identified as a Catholic university and a Jesuit university. (ii) The University will be motivated by the moral, spiritual, and religious inspiration and values of the Judeo-Christian tradition. (iii) The University will be guided by the spiritual and intellectual ideals of the Society of Jesus. (iv) The University, through the fulfillment of its corporate purposes, by teaching, research, and community service, is, and will be, dedicated to the education of men and women, to the greater glory of God, and to the temporal and eternal well-being of all men and women.
